What are some signs that braces may be needed?
•  The upper teeth are protruded in front of the lower teeth - Overjet.
•  The upper teeth are behind the lower teeth - underbite.
•  The upper and lower teeth do not touch when biting together - openbite.
•  Poorly aligned teeth, not enough space - crowding.
•  One or more of the upper teeth bite inside of the lower teeth - crossbite.
•  Thumb habits that persist in children into the elementary school year.
•  Teeth wearing unevenly or excessively due to alignment problems.
•  The lower jaw shifts to one side when biting together.
•  Spaces between the teeth.
•  The upper and lower jaws seen poorly aligned or do not fit together will.
•  Other dental work is planned, but orthodontics has been recommended first to make it possible.

Do braces hurt?
The placement of braces on your teeth does not hurt. After 6-8 hours, you may feel soreness of your teeth and the inside of your lips/cheeks for a few days. Over the counter medication like Tylenol or Motrin are helpful for some people during this
time. However, most of our patients tell us it is not as bad as they expected!

What kind of technology is used in the practice?
•  We use light-force nickel titanium "memory wires," which are proven to move the teeth more efficiently and with the lighter pressure than was possible in the past.
•  We offer self-ligating braces, which provide less friction and faster tooth movement. Adults who had braces in the past are always amazed at how much better orthodontics has become.
•  Our office provides digital radiography, which produces a fraction of the exposure of traditional x-rays. It also eliminates the need for toxic chemicals that were used to develop these films in the past.
•  Dr. Burn is an experienced provider for all Invisalign©
•  products, which is a prescription removable aligner system made from virtual computer modeling.

Will braces interfere with playing musical instruments or sports?"
No, but it may take some time to adjust to these activities with braces. Soft wax or special "brace covers" can help with playing instruments. For sports, our office can provide you with a custom-fitted mouth guard.
